How can I help raise awareness of stammering within my workplace?

There are a variety of ways you can increase stammering awareness in your workplace. You might like to consider holding an event, preparing a talk, or becoming an ASC ambassador for your organisation. Whatever you choose to do, we are on hand to offer support and provide resources if needed.

The article details a few ideas to get you started.

Organise a Fundraiser

One of the most effective ways to introduce your colleagues to stammering is by engaging them in an activity that opens up the conversation. Whether it's a bake sale in the staff kitchen, Christmas raffle, or getting a group of workmates together to take on a sponsored challenge (Three Peaks, anyone?), fundraisers are a great way to raise awareness of stammering within your workplace.

We can provide the branded t-shirts, memorabilia and the support on socials. And, as a bonus, every penny you raise through a fundraising event for Action for Stammering Children helps us to continue to support the 8% of children who stammer across the UK. Find out more about fundraising for ASC.

Join our Stambassador Network

If you are an adult with lived-experience of stammering, you might be interested to explore the opportunity to become an ASC Stambassador – an ASC ambassador within your organisation. Through this partnership we can support both you and your employer to raise awareness of stammering to promote a more inclusive and respectful workplace for individuals who stammer. This is also a great way to get involved in our community - join us for networking events for Stambassadors, help us spread the word about transformational initiatives and volunteer to work with our young people.

Mark International Stammering Awareness Day

Workplaces are often a hive of activity on dedicated activism days - and each year a day is dedicated to stammering.

International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD) first took place in 1998 and is celebrated each year on 22nd October. We usually host a programme of events to mark it alongside the international stammering community. And we love sharing stories of how our supporters have marked it too!

Sign up to our mailing list and follow us on our socials to stay in the loop with the events we hold each year to mark this important date. Do you have any ideas for holding your own event in your workplace for ISAD? Don’t forget to let us know about it!
