We are raising my child to be bilingual but they have developed a stammer. Should we only speak English with them? Will that help?

No, raising a child to speak more than one language does not cause a stammer.

We know that millions of children speak multiple languages worldwide and most do not develop a stammer.

Children who stammer will often find they stammer more when learning new words and using longer sentences no matter which language they are speaking in. The stammer is not due to the specific languages being learnt or the fact that they are learning more than one. You can continue to speak with your child in the language in which you feel most comfortable and proficient.

If you would like to access speech and language therapy to support your child, then you may find it helpful to read more about how to make a referral using the links below. Remember to mention to the speech and language therapist that your child is bilingual - it will be important for them to have all the information.
