To access Speech and Language Therapy, a referral will need to be made for your child. This means that a referral form with some details about your child and their stammer will be sent to a Speech and Language Therapy service. The speech and language therapy service should contact you to let you know the next steps, which might include inviting you and your child to an initial consultation and providing you with strategies to support your child at home.
Each Speech and Language Therapy provider will have their own referral process. In many cases, you as their parent or caregiver can make the referral by filling out the form from home. Some services may only accept referrals made by a professional. In this instance, they may ask you to speak with your GP, health visitor or an education professional to ask them to make a referral for you.
We can help you find out where your local services are based, and how you can make a referral to them - just contact our Support Hub Advisor.
Once you have been referred to your local Speech and Language Therapy service, you can expect to hear back from them letting you know that they have received your referral. Sometimes they may also be able to give you an idea of how long you might need to wait until you will have your first contact with a Speech and Language Therapist for a consultation or assessment. Waiting times can vary significantly between services.
