What if Speech and Language Therapy doesn’t feel like it’s helping?

If you feel like your Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) sessions aren’t really working for you, it's important to say so.

Start by having a chat with your therapist. They’re there to support you, so it’s important they know how you’re feeling. Be honest – what’s helping, what’s not, and what you wish was different. Your feedback really matters.

It might help to look back at the goals you set at the start of therapy. Are they still the right ones for you? Do they feel useful? If not, that’s something worth talking about too.

Still not working out?

If you’ve already had that chat and things still don’t feel right, you can ask whether it’s possible to see a different therapist. You can do this by getting in touch with the Therapy Services Manager. Just keep in mind that switching might mean a bit of a wait for someone new to become available.

Support beyond therapy

Therapy is just one type of support – and it doesn’t work the same way for everyone. That’s why Action for Stammering Children runs a bunch of projects designed especially for young people like you.

Most of these projects are aimed at teenagers, as we know support can be harder to find at secondary school age. Whether you want to meet other young people who stammer, build confidence, or just try something a bit different – there’s probably something that could suit you.

And the best part? These projects are open to young people from all across the UK.
