Speech and Language Therapists support children who stammer by assessing their needs, formulating goals and implementing strategies to support the child’s communication, wellbeing and learning.
The type of therapy approach and content of the sessions provided for a child will depend on their age and will vary between service-providers.
Following initial assessment, speech and language therapists will share information with the child’s parents/caregivers and GP, and usually work closely with their class teacher and Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), to provide tailored-strategies and support.
Speech and language therapists work with children in many environments, including health centres, hospitals, outpatient departments, children’s centres, at school, at home or online.
You can find out more about what Speech and Language Therapists do by visiting the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists' website.
