How can my school work with ASC?

We recognise that the best way to ensure our activities are meaningful is by working closely with those we seek to support. We welcome opportunities to work with our school partners to inform our work, while also seeing it as an opportunity to raise greater awareness about the impact of stammering for the benefit of the young people in your classrooms.

In this article, we share some of the ways that we can work with you to unlock the potential of pupils in your school and create a positive education experience for children and young people who stammer.

Promoting Stammering Awareness in your school community

If you haven't already, we'd encourage you to take a look at the following resources created in collaboration with young people, education professionals and speech and language therapists. These resources can be used to inform, advocate for greater understanding and promote inclusivity in schools.

  1. The ASC Stammer Awareness Toolkit is an interactive e-learning resource for schools throughout the UK, which has been created to support education staff in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for pupils who stammer.

By signing up to access the knowledge and support of the Toolkit for your school, you are not only supporting your students who stammer, but contributing to a key action area of our mission: to change attitudes and reduce the stigma which is too-often faced by children and young people who stammer.

  2. Join the Community of Practice - an interactive area within the ASC Stammer Awareness Toolkit offers the space to collaborate with colleagues by sharing tips, experiences and resources. This section has been created to enable the sharing of best practice between ASC stammer-aware schools and is a fantastic way to gain inspiration for your own work in supporting students who stammer.

Your subscription to the Stammer Awareness Toolkit gives you automatic access to the Community of Practice. Here, Toolkit subscribers are invited to create a member profile which allows them to connect and collaborate with colleagues across the UK; access peer support, swap resources and share experiences of putting stammering awareness into practice in their schools.

  3.  Organise a fundraiser - whether it’s a bake sale, competition or raffle, fundraisers are a great way to support our charity while also raising awareness of stammering within your school. For information and inspiration, visit our fundraising webpages and get in touch with the Support Hub Advisor if you'd like to know how we can support you.

Share your ideas, inform our priorities

We offer access to a range of therapy programmes for young people who stammer, as well as opportunities to bring about change through research, policy and campaigns and connect with others via our community programmes. Here are some of the ways you can help shape our activities:

  1. Share our programmes with pupils who you think could benefit from our therapy programmes. From residential stammering courses to career mentoring schemes, our programmes are designed to meet the needs of adolescents navigating that challenging transition into early adulthood.
  2. Give us feedback on the support we offer - our Stammering Support Hub and Stammer Awareness Toolkit were both developed in consultation with the stammering community. This has shaped their design, enabling us to provide signposting and guidance in a way that is accessible, practical and evidence-based. We want to know what you think, how we can improve and where the remaining gaps are. Get in touch support@stammeringchildren.org or complete the evaluation forms when you access these services.
  3. Participate in research - through our work with the research community, we are often asked to share information about upcoming research studies. Consider taking part and informing our understanding through research.

If you haven't already, we'd encourage you to sign up to our mailing list so that you can keep abreast of the latest activities, resources and opportunities to contribute to our community.
