Can stammering develop later in life?

Stammering is typically referred to either as 'developmental' or 'acquired'.

While stammering can develop later in life, developmental stammering is the most common form of stammering and begins to appear in children as they are learning to speak and expanding their language skills.

Typically, stammering begins between 2 and 5 years of age, but it can begin later (7 - 12 years).

‘Acquired’ or ‘late-onset’ stuttering, can be caused by various factors, including head injury, stroke, or progressive neurological conditions, stress, trauma, or certain medical conditions.
